Manthia Diawara AI: African Intelligence

The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, which takes place from 16 to 26 February 2023, presents the international premiere of AI: African Intelligence (2022), the latest essay film by Manthia Diawara. The film has been selected for the Forum Expanded, a programme that aims to expand the understanding of what film is, to test the boundaries of convention and open up fresh perspectives to help grasp cinema and how it relates to the world in new ways.

Produced by Maumaus/Lumiar Cité, AI: African Intelligence explores the contact zones between African rituals of possession among traditional fishing villages of the Atlantic coast of Senegal and the emergence of new technology frontiers known as Artificial Intelligence. Considering the confluence of tradition and modernity, Diawara questions how we could move from disembodied machines towards a more humane and spiritual control of algorithms. Could Africa be the context of emergence of such improbable algorithms?
