Taking as starting point Rudolf Nureyev’s 1991 staging of the classical ballet La Bayadère, choreographed while his health was critically deteriorating, Christodoulos Panayiotou’s lecture-performance Dying on Stage is a meditation on the impossible theatrical representation of death. Exploring various literal, metaphorical, and symbolic deaths, the artist is examining the vicious relationship between the spectator, the actor and the characters trapped in the action.

Dying on Stage has been previously presented (amongst other) at the Stromboli Volcano Extravaganza 2015; at the Serpentine Galleries; Performa 15 and more recently at the Onassis Foundation in Athens and at the CND (Centre National de da Dance) after the invitation of Jérôme Bel (Lab Bel).

Christodoulos Panayiotou's (b. 1978, Limassol, Cyprus) wide-ranging research focuses on the identification and uncovering of hidden narratives in the visual records of history and time. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held (amongst other) at Lumiar Cité, Lisbon; Rodeo Gallery, London; Galerie Kamel Mennour, Paris; The Venice Biennial, The Cyprus Pavillion, Venice, Italy; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Casino Luxembourg, Luxembourg; CCA Kitakyushu, Japan; Centre d’Art Contemporain de Brétigny, France; Museum of Contemporary Art, St. Louis, USA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig, Germany; Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland and Cubitt, London, UK. He has participated in major international survey exhibitions, including the 8th Berlin Biennale; 7th Liverpool Biennial; Documenta 13, Kassel; 6th Taipei Biennale and Busan Biennale 2008. His work was also shown in a number of museum exhibitions including: Centre Pompidou, paris, France; Museion, Bolzano, Italy; Migros Museum, Zürich, Switzerland; CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, USA; Joan Miro Foundation, Barcelona, Spain; Witte de With, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden; Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA; Ashkal Alwan Center for Contemporary Arts, Beirut, Lebanon; Artist Space, New York, USA, MoCA Miami, USA.

Ao descer a escada
Há um degrau p’ra me sentar.
Não há outro degrau
Onde descansar.
Não estou lá em baixo
Nem lá em cima estou.
Estou é na escada
Onde sempre estou.

Ao subir a escada
Não estou em cima, nem em baixo.
Não estou na creche,
Nem mesmo no sopé, acho.
Ideias estranhas começam a girar
Na minha cabeça
Fora do lugar!
