Other Recent Examples is not technically an artist’s book, and nor is it a catalogue, an essay book, nor an exercise in translation; and yet, it is all of these things at the same time. This publication brings together work that looks into the different functions, uses and forms of pedagogy, alongside other works that reflect on the links between the mother tongue, bilingualism and the peculiar ecosystem that sustains this interrelation. Other Recent Examples also includes an essay by Mirene Arsanios, exhibition cards of expanded artworks, as well as a series of epigraphs that work like a prologue and reveal the influence of Macedonio Fernández on the conception of this publication.
Published on the occasion of the exhibitions by Alejandro Cesarco at Artium Museoa (Vitoria) and Lumiar Cité (Lisbon).
Alejandro Cesarco uses strategies of translation and appropriation, which involves narrating and re-narrating, interpreting, misinterpreting, quoting and mediating. One central aspect of his work is all about questioning the differences and similarities between looking and reading. Cesarco’s work investigates the book as technology, it looks into the construction and conservation of memory and acts upon the limits and opacity of language. By means of different formats and strategies, Cesarco makes use of the secret, indexicality and fragmentation as narrative modalities. His work, although rooted in the history of art and influenced by literature and theory, is not confessional, yet it is still deeply personal. In general terms, it studies how meanings are displaced via different forms of repetition, such as recontextualisation and translation.
