Sixth-century Arabic epic poetry required each poet to begin their poem from a site of destruction, surrounded by ruins. For this workshop, we’ll be considering the act of ‘destruction’ while searching beyond the idea or pretence of reconstruction. This is an attempt to seek inspiration to work and reflect together on how to embark from times of destruction towards new possibilities for artistic engagement, creation and consideration. Taking destruction as a place to explore new artistic forms and language, the seminar shares how this has been a vital experience for many artists to work with over the past decades in Palestine under colonial rule.
Adania Shibli (Palestine, 1974) has written novels, plays, short stories and narrative essays. She has twice been awarded with the Qattan Young Writer’s Award-Palestine in 2001 for her novel Masaas (2002, translated as Touch), and in 2003 for her novel Kulluna Ba’id bethat al Miqdar aan el-Hub (2004, translated as We Are All Equally Far from Love). Her latest is the novel Tafsil Thanawi (2017, translated as Minor Detail and published by Dom Quixote as Um Detalhe Menor), which was shortlisted for the National Book Award in 2020, and in 2021 was nominated for the International Booker Prize.
Registration is free but limited to the number of seats available. Please send an email with a short CV to admin@maumaus.org by 05.03.2025. Confirmation of registration will be sent by email. The seminar will be in English.
