Lecture Sabine Breitwieser, Building Collections 2018

Having organized more than 150 exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States as well as edited and published around 100 catalogues and books, Sabine Breitwieser comes to Lumiar Cité to speak about the criteria, methodologies and strategies of collecting art within an institutional context. As the founding director of the Generali Foundation in Vienna, Austria, she will discuss how she helped establish one of the most important contemporary art collections in Europe. During her presentation, Sabine Breitwieser will introduce a notion of art, which oscillates between notions of artistic quality and the Political which inform her decisions during the collecting of art and the making of exhibitions.

Sabine Breitwieser is an international curator and museum director. Until recently she held the position of the Director of the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg. Previously, from 2010 until 2013, she was Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. From 1988 until 2007 she was the Founding Director and Chief Curator of the Generali Foundation in Vienna. From 2004 until 2013 she was on the board of CIMAM – the International Committee of ICOM for Museums and Collections of Modern Art. She is affiliated with numerous professional organisa- tions, such as AICA, CAA as well as a corresponding member of the Secession in Vienna. In 2004 she was co-curator and researcher of the International 04, Liverpool Biennial. Sabine Breitwieser has published numerous essays on contemporary art and museum management. She lecturers frequently at universities and has participated in a large number of conferences and symposia. In 2012 she was the Regent Lecturer at the University of California in Berkeley, USA. In 2012 Sabine Breitwieser received the Yoko Ono Lennon Courage Award in New York.
