Anna Schachinger, Birnbaum, 2021 (acrylic and oil on linen, detail)
In Anna Schachinger’s paintings, lines are neither contour nor outline; they start and end somewhere, bending and wriggling according to what they meet on the way, encounters on manifold surfaces, suggesting an endless meandering beyond the surface. The semi-abstract works evoke a spilling of paint and interwoven motifs, while at the same time hinting at processes of ordering, tidying and repurposing. Schachinger is interested in how to build non-linear narratives, in which different meanings can collide and allow for contradictions to appear in the image.
Schachinger’s exhibition at Lumiar Cité consists of paintings on different supports, such as ceramic sculptures and fabric, that together form an installation. Decisions on the scale of the installation and of the individual artworks at Lumiar Cité reflect the artist’s exploration of the gallery space seen from the in- and outside. Gravity becomes one of the common denominators: ceramics with flat surfaces and legs, produced during the artist’s residency in Portugal, have to keep their balance so as not fall flat on their faces or backs, while the fronts and backs of stretched canvases peer around the gallery’s corners, revealing inwardness and serenity as well as fragility, chaos and (possible) disaster.
The day before the exhibition opens, the artist and chef Ayami Awazuhara will host the event Circulating Salt, which focuses on the history of salt as a material in relation to the landscape of the human body.
