Lumiar Cité presents the exhibition ‘ODD’, comprising work by Luisa Cunha, one of Portugal's most renowned contemporary artists. The artist is particularly known for her sound and text installations, in which succinct, restrained and subtly articulated sentence fragments suggest an analytical, sometimes absurd if not humorous approach to the environments in which her work is shown.

For Lumiar Cité, the artist has created new contexts for two pieces from her extensive oeuvre, accompanied by their possible readings that derive from the challenging architectural characteristics of Lumiar Cité. With these combined, Cunha skilfully activates the site and its integration into the Alta de Lisboa neighbourhood, while the specific nature of the exhibition space the artist has identified give her works a special meaning.

A new sound installation produced especially for the exhibition focuses on the viewing of art itself, where what is heard seemingly competes with what is seen by drawing attention to a physical object, through which the work's immaterial aspect becomes inseparable from its material manifestation.

Luisa Cunha's art leads back to itself; among all possible perspectives from which to approach her work, it is its ‘quiet’ self-referentiality that allows the viewer to contemplate the circumstances necessary for art to be able to exist.

Luisa Cunha (Lisbon, 1949) lives and works in Lisbon. She has a degree in Germanic Philology from the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa and completed the Advanced Sculpture Course at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual. She has been exhibiting since 1994, including at the following venues and events: 14th Biennale of Sydney, 34th São Paulo Biennial, Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, Casa da Cerca – Centro de Arte Contemporânea, Casa da Música, Culturgest, Fidelidade Arte, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Fundación ‘la Caixa’, Galeria Municipal do Porto, LisboaPhoto 2005, MAAT – Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Museu Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva, Museu de Serralves, as well as various independent venues. She won the Grande Prémio Fundação EDP Arte in 2021, and was awarded the Prémio AICA/MC/Millennium BCP de Artes Visuais in 2022.
