exergue – on documenta 14 (2024) de Dimitris Athiridis
Culturgest, Auditório Emílio Rui Vilar, 21– 23.10.2024
In partnership with CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian and Maumaus / Lumiar Cité, Doclisboa International Film Festival presents a discussion on Dimitris Athiridis’s cinematic opus exergue – on documenta 14 (2024). Following the screening of the work’s 14 chapters at Culturgest, Dimitris Athiridis and Adam Szymczyk, the main protagonist of the film and Artistic Director of documenta 14, will discuss the process of conceiving documenta 14 and making the film at CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, moderated by researcher Luísa Santos.
exergue – on documenta 14 follows Adam Szymczyk and his curatorial team over two years as they develop ‘Learning from Athens’, a historic edition of what is considered the world’s most prominent art exhibition. In 2017 it was not only held in Kassel, Germany, but also in Athens, Greece, the epicenter of Europe’s financial crisis at the time. documenta 14 sparked critical controversy and reactions due to its radical curatorial approach and critical reflection on history, which was frequently perceived as didactic or instrumentalising politically urgent issues such as the refugee crisis, neo-liberalisation and the global rise of the far right. At the same time, it was under attack as it raised uncomfortable questions about the art institution’s dependencies on local politics and the funding mechanisms of the art world.
exergue – on documenta 14 invites audiences into a behind-the-scenes observation of the dramatic course of development of documenta 14 and captures a reflection of the institutional art world and the function of contemporary art in a shifting global landscape.
Adam Szymczyk’s visit to Portugal is part of the Maumaus Residency Programme. In addition to the lecture, he is carrying out research into contemporary Portuguese artistic creation, an aspect of the Residency Programme that has already seen the participation of curators and researchers such as Sabine Breitwieser, Roger M. Buergel, Corinne Diserens, Ashish Ghadiali, Mason Leaver-Yap, Nuria Enguita, Elvira Dyangani Ose, Lucia Pietroiusti, Mats Stjernstedt, Milan Ther, among others.
Tickets for the screening are on sale now (doclisboa.org, Culturgest). Entry for the discussion is free and limited to the number of seats available. The film is subtitled in English and Portuguese. The discussion will be in English.
